Why has July become a ‘money-making machine’ : Umama
Umama Fatema, former spokesperson and coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, has raised serious concerns about the exploitation of the July movement for financial gain and political control.
Speaking in a live broadcast on her verified Facebook page last Sunday, Umama described July’s protests as a powerful and genuine struggle but expressed disappointment that some individuals have turned it into a platform for tenders, influence peddling, and territorial occupation.
“July was a huge experience of people’s courage and sacrifice. I never imagined anyone would make money from it,” she said. “But after becoming spokesperson, I found many involved in corrupt activities using the movement as a front.”
Umama also criticized the role of so-called coordinators who, after August 5, allegedly engaged in extortion and territorial takeovers, sometimes supported by local Awami League security forces. She warned that these groups are forming a “coordinator force” that is steadily gaining control over various areas.
After August 5, Umama stepped away from the student federation to work independently, citing ideological differences and exclusion after she suggested shutting down the platform.
Reflecting on the movement’s legacy, she emphasized the need for a broader, inclusive approach beyond just students to sustain the anti-discrimination cause and build on the mass uprising sparked in July and August.
Addressing personal criticism, Umama said she faced backlash and lost support but remains committed to rebuilding the country with the help of young, enthusiastic activists.
Responding to rumors about her wealth, she stated, “I have a good life with family support and do not need scholarships or financial gain. My focus is on contributing to the nation.”
