Wife and child of Chhatra League leader found dead in Bagerhat

Police in Bagerhat recovered the bodies of a local Chhatra League leader’s wife and child. Family members claim the mother killed her infant child by drowning before committing suicide.

The bodies were recovered on Friday afternoon from a house in Sabekdanga village, Sadar upazila. The deceased are Kaniz Suborna Swarnali, 22, and her nine-month-old child, Nazim Hossain.

Police said Kaniz Suborna Swarnali’s body was found hanging in a room with her scarf around her neck, while her child’s body lay on the floor in the same room. Locals alerted the authorities, who recovered the bodies on-site.

Swarnali was the wife of Juel Hasan Saddam, president of Bagerhat Sadar Upazila Chhatra League, currently serving time in prison for multiple cases.

Swarnali’s brother Shuvo said that after the student and public uprising, Juel Hasan Saddam was arrested in Gopalganj. Swarnali had a good relationship with her in-laws and loved her husband dearly, trying for a long time to secure his bail. When bail was not granted, she became mentally distressed and suffered from depression and loneliness. In her despair, she first killed her infant by submerging him in water and then took her own life.

Her father Ruhul Amin Howlader said his daughter committed suicide and the family does not blame anyone. They have requested permission to take the bodies for post-mortem before the autopsy.

Officer-in-charge of Bagerhat Sadar Police Station, Md Masum Khan, said that both bodies were sent to the Bagerhat District Hospital morgue for post-mortem. He added that the case is under legal investigation, and the actual cause of death will be confirmed after the autopsy report.
