Shah Poran Alam Rabbi, the president of a now-defunct unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), was arrested in connection with a sabotage case in Faridganj of Chandpur. Just four days after his arrest, his wife, Nusrat Jahan Faria, gave birth to their child. Tragically, she later died while on life support at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

According to reports, Rabbi was arrested by Faridganj Police on the night of July 19. He was sent to jail the following day, July 20, through the court. On that very morning, his pregnant wife Nusrat began experiencing labor pains. She was first admitted to Faridganj Life General Hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College for better care. On the night of July 23, she gave birth to a baby girl. However, due to postnatal complications, she was placed on life support and eventually passed away.

Rabbi was released on bail on July 24. Nusrat’s funeral prayer was held after Maghrib, and she was buried at the family graveyard.

Rabbi’s uncle, Saiful Islam Sohel, General Secretary of the local Union Awami League, said, “We were followers of former MP Dr. Shamsul Haque Bhuiyan and held party positions during his time. But after MP Shafiqur Rahman came to power, false cases were filed to harass us. Although we stepped away from politics, our posts remained because the party never held a council. I myself have been jailed, and now my nephew has suffered a similar fate. He’s lost everything.”

Officer-in-Charge of Faridganj Police Station, Shah Alam, stated that Rabbi was arrested in a case filed over acts of sabotage and vandalism at a BNP party office. He was named as an accused in the case's FIR.
