Will complete reform activities if given a year's time: Asif Nazrul

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul has assured that the reforms will be implemented if given a year. He said, if there is consensus, the next political government will not be able to easily change or cancel these reforms. There is no alternative for us rather than reform activities.

He said this at a dialogue organized by the Center for Governance Studies at the CIRDAP auditorium in the capital on Monday.

Dr. Asif Nazrul said that the chief adviser of the interim government and the head of the Reform Commission have given verbal consent to implement the reforms on the issue of national consensus.

He said that the higher judiciary of Bangladesh has been given all the powers that were used to keep Sheikh Hasina's fascist government in power and consolidate their authority. At that time, many were detained for long periods without being proven guilty and bail applications were often rejected.

He further said that if there were fair elections in the country every five years and the elected party formed the government, then the ruling party would not have been able to use the judiciary to behave so autocratically.

Stating that judicial appointments to the High Court have been made based on political affiliation, he said that the process of appointing judges to the High Court will be finalized based on three reform proposals.
