A woman has been arrested in Shariatpur’s Chandrapur area after allegedly killing her husband during a domestic dispute, dismembering his body and later attempting to store parts of the remains in a refrigerator.

The accused, Asma Akter, was detained after locals alerted emergency services upon noticing a strong foul smell coming from a residence on Friday evening.

According to police and local sources, the victim, Jiya Sardar, a Malaysia expatriate, had returned to Bangladesh last year and had been living with his wife in a rented house in the Chandrapur area under ongoing marital disputes.

Police said the incident took place on May 12, when an argument between the couple escalated and Asma allegedly struck her husband on the head with an iron rod, killing him on the spot. She then allegedly used a knife to dismember the body, separating flesh and bones, and stored the remains in a drum.

Three days later, on Friday evening, she reportedly disposed of parts of the body in multiple locations, including throwing severed limbs into the Padma riverbank area in Naria, which were later recovered by police.

She then allegedly attempted to store portions of the flesh in a refrigerator at a former rented residence in Palong area, where a strong odor prompted locals to call the national emergency helpline 999.

Police rushed to the scene and detained the woman. During preliminary interrogation, she confessed to the killing and disposal of the body parts, officials said.

Based on her information, police later recovered additional remains, including the victim’s head and bones, from a pond in the Brishtola area on Friday night.

Shah Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Palong Model Police Station, confirmed the arrest and said investigations are ongoing to determine whether anyone else was involved in the incident.
