Woman dies four days after falling from rickshaw during snatching attempt
A woman died in hospital four days after she fell from a moving rickshaw and suffered severe injuries when a snatcher tried to grab her bag.
The deceased, Soheli Islam, 42, was a medical service officer at a pharmaceutical company and lived in a rented flat in Dhanmondi area, capital. She was returning home with her daughter after getting off a bus.
When the rickshaw reached the Shahid Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital area, two snatchers on a motorcycle tried to grab her vanity bag. During the tug-of-war, she fell off the rickshaw and sustained critical injuries. Her right hand was broken and she suffered a severe blow to the back of her head. Bystanders rushed her to a hospital after she began bleeding from her ear.
After four days of treatment, she died on Thursday, June 11. Her body was later buried in her hometown in Parbatipur upazila, Dinajpur.
A single mother, Soheli was raising her daughter alone after a long struggle. Her only daughter is currently a university student.
Family members said she was taken to several hospitals after the accident but could not be saved. No case had been filed over the incident as of Friday, though the family said they would take legal action later. Locals have demanded a swift investigation and arrest of the perpetrators.
