Woman dies trying to save son from beating by BNP leaders

A mother who went to save her son has reportedly been beaten to death in Ukhia Cox's Bazar. Locals have claimed that the accused are linked to BNP and Chhatra Dal politics.

The incident took place around 8 pm on Saturday (May 16) in the Typalong area of ​​Ukhia's Rajapalong union.

The deceased, Syeda Begum, is the wife of Sabbir Ahmed, a resident of the village.

Locals saud that a few days ago, 'Joy Bangla, Joytu Sheikh Hasina' was written on the wall of the local Typalong madrasa. Local BNP leaders filed a complaint with the police station against some leaders and activists of the activities-banned Awami League in this incident. On Saturday evening, Chhatra Dal activist Md. Jisan posted a status on Facebook about the wall writing. Banned Chhatra League activist Md. Yunus reacted with laugh emoji to it.

Eyewitnesses said that some BNP and Chhatra Dal leaders and activists detained Yunus at night and started beating him up over his reaction on Facebook. At that time, his friend and local NGO activist SM Imran went to protect him. At that time, Imran was also beaten severely. Upon hearing the news of the attack on Imran, his mother Syeda Begum rushed to the spot. At that time, she was also attacked while trying to protect her son. At that time, she fainted at the spot. Later, she was rescued and taken to the Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor declared him dead.

Syeda Begum's son SM Imran alleged that BNP and Chhatra Dal leaders and activists were involved in the attack. In particular, a BNP leader beat up his mother. His SSC examinee sister, his wife and several other family members were injured in the attack. He said that local BNP leaders Mizan Sikder, Abdul Karim, Akash, Saiful Sikder, Syed Babul, Mahbubur Rahman, Salam Sikder; Chhatra Dal leader Jisan, ambulance driver Shamsul Alam and several others participated in the attack.

Meanwhile, around 10:30 pm on Saturday, some of the accused held a press conference and claimed that they were not involved in the attack and that no one was present at the scene. Accused Mizan Sikder and Abdul Karim said, "The woman died of illness. No one can show evidence that the woman was attacked. There is a planned conspiracy to implicate us in a murder case."

Upazila BNP president Sarwar Jahan Chowdhury said, "The attack did not happen in Ukhia at night. The woman's house is far from the scene. The woman died of illness at home. If the police investigation proves the murder and if anyone from BNP is also involved in the incident, action will be taken."

Meanwhile, after the incident, the police arrested banned Chhatra League activist Md. Yunus. When asked, Ukhia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mujibur Rahman said that local people detained Yunus in a shop. Police arrested Yunus from that shop and brought him to the police station.

When asked about the death of Syeda Begum, the OC said that the woman named Syeda Begum died in the hospital. No injury marks were found on her body during the preparation of the post-mortem report. An investigation is underway to find out the cause of her death. The body has been sent to the Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. No case has been filed in this incident till 8:30 am on Sunday.
