Woman engineer dies after scarf, hair get entangled in generator in Ukhiya

Farhana Haque, 29, a woman engineer, died after her scarf and hair got entangled in a generator while inspecting work at a hospital in a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar.

The accident occurred at a hospital run by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in the Block-A/11 area of Camp-3 in Ukhiya around 10:30am on Monday (August 24).

The deceased, Farhana Haque, was a resident of Uttara area in Dhaka. She was working as a senior field engineer at IOM.

Police and relevant sources said Farhana went to the hospital at Camp-3 around 9:30am to inspect the work there. While inspecting around 10:20am, her scarf got entangled with a generator. Her hair subsequently got caught in the generator as well, leaving her critically injured.

Following the incident, doctors at the hospital gave her first aid. As her condition worsened, she was advised to be taken to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital. However, police said she died on the way to the hospital.

Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Atikur Rahman said the woman was critically injured after her scarf and hair got entangled with a generator during a work inspection, and she died on the way to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital afterward. Her body has been kept in the morgue, and the incident is being investigated.

Police said they are looking into how the accident occurred, adding that whether the generator was installed and operated safely is also under investigation.
