Woman killed in motorcycle-covered van collision in Tungipara, driver held

A woman has been killed and the motorcycle driver injured in a head-on collision between a motorcycle and a covered van in Tungipara, Gopalganj. The driver of the covered van has been detained by police.

The accident occurred around 9:00 am on Saturday, May 16, in the Joaria Bazar area of Gopalpur union in the upazila.

The deceased has been identified as Sima Sarkar, 40, wife of Shobuj Sarkar of Nailtala village in Nazirpur upazila, Pirojpur. The injured motorcycle rider, Manik Sarkar, 30, is the son of Niranjan Sarkar of the same area. They were brother-in-law and sister-in-law.

According to police and local sources, Manik was taking his sister-in-law Sima from Pirojpur towards Gournadi in Barishal on Saturday morning when a goods-laden covered van coming from the opposite direction collided with the motorcycle.

Sima was thrown off the motorcycle and suffered severe head injuries, dying on the spot. Injured Manik was taken to Tungipara Upazila Health Complex by locals.

Tungipara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ayub Ali said police recovered the body and detained the covered van driver, Shamim Sheikh, 35. No case has been filed yet, but legal proceedings are ongoing.
