A woman has reportedly drowned eight puppies to death in Ishwardi of Pabna.

The carcasses of the puppies were recovered from a pond in Ishwardi Upazila Parishad on Monday (December 1) morning.

One Nishi Begum, the wife of an official of the Small Farmers Development Foundation, committed the crime.

In this regard, Jahangir, the caretaker of the Upazila Executive Officer's residence, said that a mother dog recently gave birth to eight puppies in a residential building. After not seeing the puppies after Sunday (November 30) evening, the mother dog started searching here and there. It also started crying loudly. It was seen going from door to door of various houses in the Officers' Club and residential area all night. Even though it was given food during this time, the dog did not eat anything. Due to this, it became sick.

He further said: "On Monday morning, when Hasanur Rahman Nayan, an officer of the Small Farmers Foundation, was riding his motorcycle with his son, I asked him about the puppies. He said, I don't know anything about it. At that time, his younger son said, my mother had put the puppies in a sack and thrown those in the pond. Hearing this, Hasanur Rahman quickly left the place. Later, when I went to the pond, I saw the dead puppies floating in the sack. When I picked it up and opened the sack, I saw that the puppies were dead."

When contacted, Hasanur Rahman Nayan admitted the truth of the incident. He said: "I am extremely mentally disturbed by this incident. I cannot say anything more than this."

Upazila Livestock Officer Aklima Khatun said: "This is very inhumane. The mother dog has already fallen ill. Our people have given it treatment. The UNO has said that he will take action in this regard."

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Moniruzzaman said: "I am extremely shocked by the incident that took place in the council premises. I spoke to the officers in the council this morning. An investigation is underway. Action will definitely be taken against the offender."
