A woman named Lucky Sing (24) lost her leg in a landmine explosion while collecting bamboo shoots near the Myanmar border in Nikuchhari, under Ghumdhum Union of Naikhongchhari upazila in Bandarban.

The incident occurred on Monday morning (August 4) between border pillars 42 and 43 in the Nikuchhari area, confirmed Naikhongchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Muhammad Mazharul Islam Chowdhury.

Lucky Sing is the daughter of Sumong Karbari from Gachhbunia village in Sonaichhari Union of Naikhongchhari. Her left leg was completely severed in the blast.

Citing locals, UNO Mazharul Islam Chowdhury said the explosion happened suddenly as she crossed over into the Myanmar side of the border to collect bamboo shoots. Locals rescued her and took her to the MSF hospital in Kutupalong, Ukhiya. After receiving initial treatment, she was transferred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for advanced care.

Since January this year, at least 23 people have been injured—some losing limbs—in landmine explosions along the border.
