Woman reportedly gang-raped after being lured with marriage promise, one arrested

A man has been arrested on charges of gang-raping his lover after luring her with a promise of marriage. The accused, identified as Jahid, was detained by police in connection with the incident that took place on Monday night, March 23, in the Char Luchni area of Baman Danga union in Nageshwari upazila.

According to police, the 22-year-old woman from Kedar union in the upazila had developed a romantic relationship with Jahid Hasan from the neighbouring Dhariar Para village in Ballavher Khas union over mobile phone. On the evening of March 23, Jahid took the woman with him, promising to take her to Dhaka and marry her.

On the way, near Aynal’s Ghat, he took her to a makeshift hut on the banks of the Dudhkumar river. There, Jahid, along with his friends Babu and another unidentified accomplice, allegedly took turns raping her before fleeing. The woman later took shelter at a house in the area late at night.

A case was filed at Kachakata Police Station on Tuesday night, March 24, following which police conducted a raid and arrested the main accused, Jahid.

Kurigram Additional Superintendent of Police (Bhurungamari Circle) Muntasir Mamun Mun said the district police are treating the matter with utmost seriousness. The prime accused has been arrested and sent to jail through court. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the other two suspects.
