Woman reportedly gang-raped in Sylhet shrine, two arrested
Amid widespread outrage over the rape and murder of four-year-old Fahima in Sylhet, another woman has been allegedly gang-raped. The victim had come to Sylhet to visit the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (R.A.), according to sources.
RAB-9 has arrested two individuals in connection with the incident on Tuesday, May 12. A third suspect remains at large. The victim, a resident of Satkhira, is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
According to RAB-9, a man initially approached the victim at the Hazrat Shahparan (R.A.) shrine area on Monday night, luring her with the promise of marriage. He then took her to a house in the LOHARPARA area adjacent to the Hazrat Shahjalal shrine. Several individuals who were already present there, along with some CNG-run autorickshaw drivers, confined the woman and gang-raped her.
The victim managed to inform neighbours on Saturday morning, and they alerted RAB. RAB-9 personnel arrived at the scene and arrested two suspects.
During the operation, RAB-9 seized a CNG-run autorickshaw and a sharp weapon (knife). The force has not yet disclosed the names of the arrestees.
Major Sadman, company commander of RAB-9's CPS, said the two arrested individuals have confessed to their involvement in the incident, and their statements match the victim's account. Efforts are underway to arrest the absconding CNG driver.
The victim has been sent to hospital for primary treatment. After her medical care, a case will be filed following legal procedures, and the arrestees will be handed over to the police station. Authorities are also investigating any past criminal records of those involved, with ongoing efforts to uncover details about the entire gang.
