Woman school teacher killed in mugging near parliament
A primary school headteacher from Bogura was killed after falling from a rickshaw during an alleged mugging near the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in Dhaka on Saturday morning (August 29).
The deceased was identified as Mosammat Ranjina Parvin, headteacher of Bagbari Girls Government Primary School in Bogura.
Police said the incident occurred around 6:30am when Ranjina was travelling by rickshaw to Islamiya Eye Hospital in Farmgate. She had come to Dhaka from Bogura for medical treatment after arriving at Gabtoli Bus Terminal early in the morning.
As the rickshaw passed the South Plaza of Parliament, suspected muggers riding a motorcycle allegedly snatched her bag from behind. Ranjina fell from the rickshaw and suffered a severe head injury.
She was rushed to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Ibne Mizan said police were examining available information to identify the motorcycle and those responsible.
“We hope to identify and arrest them very soon,” he said.
