Woman strangled to death during robbery

A woman was strangled to death in a robbery at a house in Gazipur Sadar Upazila. During this, the robbers looted cash, gold ornaments and valuables.

The incident took place around 2am at the house of Anisur Rahman in Pirujali (Madhyapara) village of Pirujali Union of the upazila on Tuesday (April 7).

The deceased Asma Akhter, 55, is the wife of Anisur Rahman of the area.

According to police and local sources, a group of robbers entered the house that night and took the family members hostage at gunpoint. At that time, when Asma Akhter resisted, the robbers attacked her and later strangled her to death by tying a towel around her neck.

The family's daughter-in-law was also tied up in the incident. The robbers looted about five lakh taka, three bhoris of gold ornaments and valuables from the house.

The next day, the police went to the scene, recovered the body and sent it to the morgue of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital for autopsy around 10am Wednesday (April 8).

Arifa Akhter, the daughter-in-law of the deceased, said that 5-6 robbers wearing black clothes and carrying knives entered the house in the dark of night. They held everyone hostage at gunpoint and killed the mother-in-law when she resisted.

Anisur Rahman said that he was working as a night watchman. After receiving the news in the morning, he came home and saw his wife's body and learned about the robbery in the house.

Joydevpur Police Station Inspector (Operations) Nayan Kumar Kar said that the body has been recovered from the scene and sent for autopsy. The matter is being investigated. It is being investigated whether it was a robbery or some other planned incident.
