Woman tied up, tortured by pouring cold water on her in Gulshan

A video showing a woman being tied to a pole and doused with water by several individuals in Gulshan has gone viral, sparking outrage.

The incident reportedly took place on Friday (January 2) in the Morol Bazar area, where the woman was allegedly accused of theft.

According to Gulshan police, the video shows the woman, dressed for winter, struggling as two people pour buckets of cold water over her while onlookers cheer and record the act on mobile phones.

Acting on the video, police detained five individuals on Saturday night (January 3) for questioning, including two madrasa teachers, Lokman and Ekram, and three students. The woman has not yet been identified or located.

Police said the incident occurred after madrasa students reportedly caught the woman allegedly stealing from a teacher’s room. The teachers initially intended to hand her over to authorities but, finding no police present, allegedly tied her up and doused her with water as a form of “punishment” before releasing her and putting her on a bus.

Rakibul Hasan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gulshan Police Station, said, “We took immediate action after seeing the video. The five suspects were brought in for questioning. The victim has not yet been identified, and the search is ongoing. No formal case has been filed so far.”
