Women journalists urged to face challenges with professionalism, dedication

Bangladesh Nari Sangbadik Kendra (BNSK) President Nasimun Ara Haque Minu has called on women journalists to overcome professional challenges through competence and dedication.

She made the remarks while speaking as chair at a discussion titled 'Challenges of Women Journalists in Media' organised by BNSK at the Economic Reporters' Forum auditorium in Dhaka's Paltan on Saturday, September 5.

Nasimun Ara Haque Minu said women journalists have reached their current position overcoming many adversities. A woman journalist has to navigate numerous barriers from the workplace, family and society. She must learn from each obstacle and move forward by utilising that experience and skill.

She said women journalists must stand by each other in any adverse situation. Unity will make it easier to face any challenge.

During the session, the BNSK president expressed grief over the death of renowned US women's rights activist and veteran journalist Gloria Steinem. A condolence motion was adopted recalling her role and contribution to the women's movement.

The discussion, moderated by BNSK General Secretary Shahnaz Siddiqui Soma, featured senior and young women journalists sharing their experiences and risks, including women's participation in journalism, workplace harassment, defamation and job insecurity.

Runa Ansari, Chattogram bureau chief of Dighanto TV, said only those with courage and determination to face adversities should enter this profession.

Senior journalist Layli Begum shared her long experience, saying she faced numerous obstacles while reporting on brick theft in Kurigram and during various investigative works.

ETV's senior journalist Shakera Arju Shimu said journalists must uphold professional ethics, honesty and responsibility regardless of changes in government or situation.

Angur Nahar Monty, coordinator of Women Journalists Network Bangladesh and former president of the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh, stressed on maintaining the eagerness to learn and merit alongside professional duties. She called for creating a coordinated database to assist journalists in distress.

BNSK leaders including Vice President Munima Sultana, Organising Secretary Shahnaz Parveen Elice, Publicity and Publication Secretary Dilruba Khan, Executive Member Aditi Rahman, and senior members Irene Niazi Manna, Umme Wara Sweety, Rita Bhaumik, Banshree Doly, Sebika Devnath and Rupam Akhtar also spoke on the occasion.

Speakers emphasised the importance of preventing workplace sexual harassment, ensuring maternity leave and other basic rights for women journalists, maintaining professional ethics, strengthening mutual cooperation and unity, and preserving the history of women journalists' long struggle.

Senior and young women journalists from various media outlets across the country attended the event.
