Worker killed in wild elephant attack in Bandarban
A worker was killed in a wild elephant attack in Lama upazila, Bandarban, on Saturday (January 25).
The victim was identified as Mohammad Kalu (50), a labourer of a Betel Leaf farm and son of Akkel Ali, hails from Shaplapur Union in Maheshkhali, Cox's Bazar.
According to locals, Kalu, who was sleeping inside, was severely injured in the attack, while a herd of wild elephants came down from the mountains early in the morning and entered his house in search of foods. Later, he was rushed to the Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Md. Nasir Uddin, member of Sarai Union Parishad, saide, "The wild elephants often come down from the mountains in search of food. A worker of Betel Leaf plantation has died after being attacked by the elephants entering a farm in the paddy field and vandalizing houses."
AKM Ata Elahi, officer of Lama Forest Division (Sadar Range), said, "We have verified the report of the attack. An investigation will be conducted, and compensation arrangements will be made. The elephant herd is entering the area due to a food shortage in the hills."
Confirming the matter, Lama Police Station's Officer-in-Charge, Md. Shahadat Hossain said, "The victim's identity had been verified and the body would be handed over to his family."
