World Blood Donor Day today
World Blood Donor Day is being observed today (June 14) across the globe, highlighting the importance of safe blood supply, encouraging voluntary donation and expressing gratitude to donors under a global humanitarian initiative.
Blood remains irreplaceable in modern medicine, playing a critical role in treating thalassemia, anaemia, childbirth complications, trauma cases and major surgeries.
Health experts say demand for safe and timely blood supply continues to rise steadily.
This year’s theme for World Blood Donor Day is “One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.” The message underscores the life-saving impact of every unit of donated blood and the need for sustained voluntary participation.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and national health authorities are marking the day through awareness campaigns, blood donation drives and community outreach programmes. Hospitals, blood banks and volunteer organisations are also conducting donation camps and educational activities, with a special focus on engaging young people to build a new generation of voluntary donors.
In Bangladesh, the annual demand for blood is estimated at over 1 million units. However, the country has yet to achieve full self-sufficiency through voluntary donation. Stakeholders say increased public awareness and broader participation of voluntary donors are essential to meeting the growing demand safely.
Several voluntary organisations, including Quantum Foundation, Sandhani, Badhan and the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, continue to play a key role in blood collection and supply management across the country.
Experts note that a single unit of donated blood can be separated into components such as plasma and platelets, allowing it to be used for multiple patients. They stress that expanding awareness and encouraging youth participation remain key to ensuring a stable and safe blood supply in the future.
