Bangladesh on Monday joined the world in celebrating World Children’s Day, a day dedicated to promoting the rights, welfare, and protection of children. The day is observed globally, although the date varies by country, with the common goal of ensuring children grow up in safe and supportive environments.

In Bangladesh, the day is commemorated annually on the first Monday of October. Various programmes, including rallies, discussions, and cultural events, were organized by both government and non-government organizations, with active participation from children.

On this occasion, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the interim government, conveyed his greetings and best wishes to children across the country. He emphasized that nurturing children in an environment of honesty, compassion, and free thinking would help them become responsible citizens who can elevate Bangladesh globally in science, technology, arts, sports, and leadership.

Dr. Yunus stated, “I firmly believe that World Children’s Day 2025 will inspire a renewed commitment to ensuring every child grows up in a safe and creative environment. Building a bright future for children will be one of the greatest achievements of a new Bangladesh.” He also wished success for the ongoing World Children’s Day and Children’s Rights Week 2025.

Historically, the first International Children’s Day was declared at the World Conference on Child Welfare in Geneva in 1925. Earlier, in 1857, Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard of the Church of the Redeemer in Chelsea, Massachusetts, USA, organized special services for children, originally called “Rose Day,” then “Flower Sunday,” and eventually Children’s Day.

In 1920, Turkey declared April 23 as a national holiday for Children’s Day, officially recognized in 1929. Later, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1959, establishing the day as a global observance.

In many countries, the day is also celebrated as Children’s Week, focusing on raising awareness about children’s rights, protection, and future development. In Bangladesh, the day continues to serve as a platform for promoting children’s welfare and creating public awareness about their rights
