World Human Rights Day is being observed today (December 10) with the theme: “Human Rights, Our Everyday Essential.”

Various human rights organisations across the country have arranged human chains, discussions and other programmes to mark the occasion.

On this day in 1948, the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Later, on December 10, 1950, the day was officially designated as World Human Rights Day.

In Bangladesh, the independent and autonomous National Human Rights Commission was established in 2009 to promote and protect human rights.

In a message marking the day, Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus said, “Today we stand proudly as a nation that has joined all nine core UN international human rights conventions. The most recent among them is the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.”

He added, “We have also signed the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture and all fundamental ILO conventions, which will help ensure workers’ rights and a safer work environment.”

The Chief Adviser further noted that as a member of the UN Human Rights Council, Bangladesh continues to play an active role in upholding human rights globally. “We are working closely with the international community to address global challenges such as conflict, humanitarian crises, climate change and forced displacement—issues that pose significant threats to the protection of human rights,” he said.
