World Mother’s Day today
World Mother’s Day is being observed today (May 10), celebrating the timeless bond of love, sacrifice and care embodied by mothers around the world, including Bangladesh.
The day is marked annually on the second Sunday of May to honour the selfless contribution of mothers to families and society.
Motherhood is widely regarded as a symbol of unconditional love and sacrifice. From sleepless nights to lifelong emotional support, mothers are often seen as the silent strength behind every family, shaping lives through care, resilience and devotion. Mother’s Day offers an occasion to express gratitude that is often left unspoken in daily life.
Origins of Mother’s Day
The modern celebration of Mother’s Day traces back to the early 20th century in the United States, led by Anna Jarvis, who sought to honour her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, and all mothers.
The first formal Mother’s Day observance took place on May 10, 1908, at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia. Following years of advocacy, then U.S. President Woodrow Wilson officially declared the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day in 1914, establishing it as a national observance dedicated to recognising maternal sacrifice and love.
Observance in Bangladesh
In Bangladesh, Mother’s Day is increasingly observed in social, cultural and family settings. Educational institutions and organisations mark the occasion through special programmes, while many people express love through flowers, gifts or spending time with their mothers.
Various food delivery and retail platforms have introduced special Mother’s Day offers, including desserts, flowers and gift packages, alongside promotional hampers for customers. Fashion houses have also launched dedicated Mother’s Day collections to mark the occasion.
In addition, a special recognition event is scheduled in Dhaka, where actress Bobita is set to receive the “Mother Award 2026” at a programme organised by Ali-Rupa Foundation. The honour recognises her acclaimed portrayals of maternal roles in cinema as well as her contribution to raising her child with strong values.
As families across the world celebrate the occasion, Mother’s Day continues to serve as a reminder of gratitude, emotional connection and the enduring importance of mothers in shaping human lives.
