Today, the world observes World Mother's Day, a day dedicated to honouring and appreciating mothers, the embodiment of compassion, care, and selfless love.

Celebrated on the second Sunday of May each year, this special day encourages children across the globe to express their gratitude and affection toward the women who have nurtured them.

While there is no single day that defines the love for mothers, Mother's Day serves as an opportunity for children to go the extra mile, showing care, affection, and thankfulness to their mothers. Mother’s Day has its roots in the United States, where it was first celebrated in 1908 by Anna Jarvis, who wanted to honour her own mother. The movement gained traction, and by 1914, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson officially declared the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

Since then, the celebration has spread worldwide, and the day is gradually becoming more prominent in countries like Bangladesh. In recent years, there has been growing awareness and recognition of the significance of this day, with social media and public celebrations reflecting an outpouring of love for mothers.

On this day, children show their appreciation in various ways: some give small gifts, others prepare their mother’s favourite meals, while some simply spend quality time with their mothers. But beyond the material gestures, a simple hug or the words "I love you, Mom" can become the most powerful expression of gratitude.

Mother’s Day serves as a poignant reminder that a mother is not just a person but an emotion, a refuge, and a symbol of dependence. The love a mother gives is selfless, timeless, and boundless—a love that never asks for anything in return.
