World Teachers’ Day being observed today
World Teachers’ Day, observed globally with reverence and due importance in Bangladesh on October 5, in line with global observance.
This year’s theme, “Recasting teaching as a collaborative profession,” underscores the importance of teamwork and shared learning in education.
First declared by UNESCO in 1993 and globally observed since 1994, the day underscores the pivotal role of teachers in shaping progressive, inclusive societies.
Celebrated in over 100 countries, the occasion emphasises the need to ensure professional freedom, fair wages, and dignified working conditions to attract and retain talent in the teaching profession.
In Bangladesh, the day is being marked with various programmes, including tributes, cultural events, and discussion forums across educational institutions. Messages of respect and gratitude are also flooding social media platforms.
A key highlight of the day is the ‘Gunijon Sommanona’ (Honouring Eminent Teachers) ceremony held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka, where 12 distinguished teachers will be officially recognised.
These individuals were selected from an initial nomination pool of 36 educators across all tiers—primary, secondary, madrasa, vocational, and higher education institutions.
