A Reuters analysis describes the 13th National Parliamentary Election as a significant turning point in Bangladesh’s political history, noting that for the first time Gen Z voters could play a decisive role in shaping the outcome. Nearly one-quarter of the electorate is under the age of 30, and their political awareness, participation in street movements and demand for change have given this election added significance.

The report notes that following the 2024 mass uprising and the subsequent ban on Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League activities, Bangladesh is moving towards a competitive election after a long period. Analysts cited by Reuters say this is the first national election since 2008 where genuine political competition is clearly visible.

According to the report, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is expected to be in a strong position, though the alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is also likely to mount a serious challenge. In addition, the Gen Z–driven new political party, the National Citizen Party (NCP), has allied with Jamaat and is attempting to translate its street-movement experience into electoral politics.

Reuters further reports that the biggest concerns of the country’s 128 million voters are corruption and inflation. Economic pressure, political deadlock and international relations—particularly the roles of China and India—are also closely linked to the election outcome.

Analysts believe the choices made by Gen Z voters will not only determine the formation of the next government, but also shape Bangladesh’s future political landscape, diplomatic orientation and the trajectory of its democratic process.
