A young man and a housewife were allegedly tied to a tree and physically assaulted by locals in Rajbari before the woman was reportedly divorced from her husband and married to the young man in a late-night incident.

The incident took place on Saturday night in Char Khankhanapur village under Rajbari Sadar upazila and came to light on Sunday (July 6) after a video of the incident went viral on social media.

In the video, the young man and the woman have been showed tied to a tree with the same rope in the courtyard of a house while several people interrogate them. At one stage, the young man was instructed to call his father to the scene. Despite repeatedly requesting to be untied, he was kept restrained for some time.

According to local residents, the young man, a resident of Ujanchar Union in Goalanda upazila, had gone to his cousin's house in Char Khankhanapur late Saturday night as he had been involved in a romantic relationship with his cousin's wife. Family members reportedly caught them together, assaulted them and tied them to a tree.

Residents said that the woman's husband later decided to end the marriage. They alleged that the couple was divorced through religious formalities later that night, after which the young man and the woman were married. The newly married couple reportedly left the area before dawn.

Uttam Kumar Ghosh, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rajbari Sadar Police Station, said, "Both the young man and the woman are adults and are now married."

"No formal complaint had been filed over the incident. If anyone files a complaint, legal action will be taken in accordance with the law," the OC added.
