A youth was beaten to death in a "massive thrashing" at Dhaka University's Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall on the night of September 18, after being suspected of theft.

The deceased, Tofazzal, was mentally unstable and was from Kathaltali Union in Patharghata, Barguna.

It has been alleged that students took Tofazzal to a guest room after he was arrested on suspicion of theft on Wednesday evening, where they beat him repeatedly until 10.00pm. It is also claimed that he was assaulted again after feeding rice in the canteen.

When the hall tutors arrived around 10 PM, some students took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around midnight. After he was declared dead, the students left him there and departed.

Saifuddin Ahmed, Proctor at Dhaka University, said, "Such incidents are unacceptable on campus. No one has the right to beat someone to death, even if they are suspected of theft."

"Efforts are underway to identify the perpetrators using CCTV footage, and a case will be filed with the police on behalf of the hall."
