A court in Cox’s Bazar has ordered three people, including a local leader of the Nationalist Change Party (NCP), to be sent to jail in connection with the beating and death of a young man. However, police said that the victim’s family has not yet filed a case at the police station.

The order was given on Tuesday (May 6) by Senior Judicial Magistrate Akhtar Jabeen, according to Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Jasim Uddin, reported UNB.

Those sent to jail are: Raiyan Kashem, son of Jahangir Kashem from Baharchhara area of Cox’s Bazar town; Mohammad Hossain, a night guard of the Allawala Hatchery owned by Raiyan’s father; and Mohammad Mizan.

Raiyan Kashem is the Cox’s Bazar coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and a local leader of NCP. His father, Jahangir Kashem, is the central vice-president of Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party).

Additional SP Jasim Uddin said that the incident took place late Sunday night at Allawala Hatchery near the old bridge in Khurushkul of Cox’s Bazar Sadar. A young man was beaten to death there. Based on suspicion, four people were detained that night. Among them, Raiyan Kashem was injured by an angry mob and was hospitalized under police custody. As his condition was not serious, doctors at Chattogram Medical College Hospital discharged him. Police brought him back to Cox’s Bazar on Monday night.

He added that on Tuesday morning, three suspects were presented before the court, which ordered them to be sent to jail. One of the four detainees was released.

Jasim Uddin also said that although the victim’s family has not yet submitted a written complaint, police are identifying those involved and continuing their investigation.

The victim, Ali Akbar, was from Kuliyapara in Khurushkul Union under Cox’s Bazar Sadar. His family claimed that he was taken from his home and killed over a false accusation of stealing fish. They believe the murder was planned due to a land dispute.

Before being attacked by the angry mob, NCP leader Raiyan Kashem told the media that security guards caught Ali Akbar red-handed while trying to steal fish from the hatchery. Raiyan claimed that when Ali Akbar attacked the guards, they hit back in self-defense, which led to his death.
