Youth beaten to death in Tongi over snatching suspicion

A young man was beaten to death by a mob in Tongi on Wednesday morning (June 24) after being suspected of involvement in snatching, police said.

The incident took place around 7:00am near the stairs of the Tongi flyover on Station Road, drawing a large crowd and prompting an immediate police response.

According to witnesses, local residents detained the youth after suspecting him of being involved in snatching activities in the area. He was allegedly assaulted by a group of people before collapsing at the scene. By the time police arrived, he had succumbed to his injuries.

Law enforcement officials recovered the body and sent it to the morgue for an autopsy.

Police said the deceased is believed to be around 22 years old, but his identity could not be confirmed immediately.

Tongi East Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Zillur Rahman said efforts are underway to identify the victim and determine the circumstances that led to the incident.

“We are investigating the case, collecting evidence and working to identify those involved in the assault,” he said.

Police have confirmed that a case has been filed and further legal proceedings are underway.
