Youth beaten to death over mosque theft attempt in Mymensingh
A 35-year-old man, Rana Mia, was killed by a mob after attempting to steal from a mosque in Trishal Upazila of Mymensingh district.
The incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Monday at Baitul Rahman Jame Mosque located in Raymoni Madhyapara, Mathbari Union.
According to locals, the mosque had been targeted by thieves multiple times before, causing widespread anger in the community. On Monday night, when Rana Mia tried to steal again, he was caught red-handed by residents. Saiful Islam, the mosque committee secretary, used the mosque’s microphone to alert and gather local people.
The crowd, inflamed by the situation, severely beat Rana Mia, who died at the scene.
Trishal police arrived shortly after and recovered the body. It was sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Officer-in-Charge of Trishal Police Station, Monsur Ahmad, said the noise of the mosque lock being broken woke several residents, who then caught Rana Mia. He added that Rana Mia had five pending criminal cases, including theft and robbery, registered in various police stations, but no arrests have been made yet in connection with this case.
