Youth beaten to death over theft allegations in Netrokona

A young man has died after being lynched by a mob over allegations of theft in Kendua upazila of Netrokona. The incident took place in the Puranbari area of Gamruli village under Royailbari union of the upazila on Saturday afternoon (July 18).

The deceased, identified as 25-year-old Emon Miah, was the son of Nurul Islam from Gamruli village. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kendua Police Station, Md. Tarikul Islam, confirmed the veracity of the incident.

According to police and local sources, there had been long-standing allegations of theft against Emon in the area. Due to these allegations, he had been away from the village for some time. Locals claimed that following a theft incident at a residence in Puranbari village on Friday night, Emon's involvement was suspected. On Saturday, locals detained him from the Atharabari railway station area while he was attempting to flee.

Later, he was tied up in front of a village mosque. At one point, he died as a result of the mass beating.

OC Md. Tarikul Islam stated that the body has been sent to the Netrokona Modern District Hospital morgue for an autopsy. No written complaint has been received regarding the incident so far. The father of the deceased is currently returning home from Sylhet, and subsequent legal action will be taken based on the complaint once he arrives.

Police added that an investigation is currently underway to determine the actual cause of the incident and to identify those involved.
