Youth beaten to death over theft in Dinajpur

A youth was beaten to death on theft charges in Dinajpur's Nawabganj upazila. Police said that most of the male residents of a tribal village have fled the area in fear of arrest.

The incident took place in the Shyampur Tongipara tribal village of the upazila early on Sunday (June 14).

The deceased, Hira Mia, 35, is the son of the late Azizar Rahman of Jatihar village in the upazila. He was an agricultural laborer by profession and the father of two children.

According to police and local sources, Anil Tudu, a resident of Shyampur village, was awakened by the sound of a window breaking in a room around 4 am. Coming out of the house, he saw Hira Mia next to the window. Later, he captured him and called the people around.

Locals came to the spot and beat Hira Mia. At one stage, he was seriously injured. Later, he died around 6 am.

Local Union Parishad member Emdadul Haque said that since the incident became known, most of the male members of the village, including the owner of the house, Anil Tudu, have left the area fearing arrest.

Upon receiving the news, a police team led by Assistant Superintendent of Police of Birampur Circle Harez Uddin, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nawabganj Police Station Abdul Quddus and Sub-Inspector (SI) David Himadri Barman visited the scene.

Police said that the deceased Hira Mia was a drug addict and had previously served time in prison. However, legal action will be taken against those involved in the murder.

Assistant Superintendent of Police of Birampur Circle Harez Uddin said that none of the male residents of the village, including the owner of the house, have been found after the incident. The process of recovering the body and sending it to the morgue of Dinajpur Medical College Hospital for autopsy is underway. Preparations are underway to file a murder case in this incident.
