Youth hacked to death after chasing from Ashura procession in Old Dhaka
A young man was hacked to death after chasing him from the Tazia procession of holy Ashura in Old Dhaka on Friday afternoon (June 26).
The victim, identified as Zakir Hossain, was attacked shortly after 5:00pm beneath a building under construction on B.K. Das Road in the Sutrapur area.
According to police, Zakir had been participating in the Tazia procession when a group of assailants allegedly chased him out of the gathering before launching a brutal attack with sharp weapons. He was critically injured and died while being taken to hospital.
Confirming the incident, Sutrapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Matiur Rahman said investigators are working to establish the victim's identity in detail and trace those responsible for the killing.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Lalbagh Division) Muhammad Talebur Rahman said preliminary findings indicate that the murder was not linked to the Ashura procession itself.
He said the attack took place beneath a nearby under-construction building, adding that police have launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the killing and identify the attackers.
Law enforcement officials are reviewing evidence and conducting raids as the investigation continues.
