Youth hacked to death in Tongi

A young man was allegedly hacked to death following a dispute over control of the local drug trade at Tongi in Gazipur.

The incident took place around 10:30pm at Gopalpur Society field in Ward 44 of Tongi East Police Station on Tuesday night (September 1).

The victim was identified as Nurul Islam, 40, son of late Nazrul Islam and Maloti Begum of Tepri Bari in Sreepur. He had been living in the Gopalpur area of Tongi East for several years.

According to local residents, Nurul had been involved in a dispute with several people over control of the drug trade in the Gopalpur, Morkun and Paghar areas. On Tuesday night, several alleged drug dealers from Morkun and Paghar, accompanied by 10 to 12 unidentified people, allegedly called him out of his home and took him to the Gopalpur Society field.

The group allegedly attacked him with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured. Locals also alleged that the attackers severed the tendons in his legs.

At around 11:30pm, the attackers allegedly put Nurul in a CNG-run autorickshaw and attempted to send him back to his home. However, he died on the way from severe blood loss.

After local residents learned of the incident, they alerted police.

Maksud Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Tongi East Police Station, said, "The body was taken to Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital. The autorickshaw driver has been taken into custody for questioning."

"The victim’s family was preparing to file a written complaint. The motive and identities of those involved would be established through investigation," the OC added.
