Youth hacked to death on way home in Tongi

A young man was hacked to death by assailants while returning home after work in Tongi of Gazipur.

The victim, Joy Mahmud, 23, son of Sirajul Islam, was attacked with sharp weapons in the Bank Math Basti area of Tongi around midnight on Monday.

Tongi East police confirmed the incident on Tuesday morning (September 29).

Police said Joy was on his way home after finishing work when several youths suddenly attacked him with sharp weapons and fled. Locals later spotted him and alerted police at the Tongi Railway Police Outpost.

Police recovered Joy’s body from the scene and sent it to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Sub-Inspector Nur Alam Hossain of the Tongi Railway Police Outpost said no one had been arrested immediately after the incident. Police initially suspect that the killing may have stemmed from a previous dispute.

Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify those involved, he said.

A murder case is being prepared at the railway police station in connection with the killing.
