Youth hacks own mother to death with sharp weapon in Faridpur
A gruesome killing has shocked Faridpur after a man was accused of murdering his own mother, nearly 10 years after allegedly being involved in the killing of his stepmother.
The incident took place in the Rahamat Mollar Dangi area of Baitul Aman on the outskirts of Faridpur town on Thursday afternoon (July 30).
The victim, Samela Begum, 60, was the wife of the late Sheikh Akbar.
Police recovered the body later in the day and sent it to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
According to police and local residents, the victim's younger son, Rahim Sheikh, 30, is alleged by family members to be mentally ill and addicted to drugs. They said he frequently became involved in disputes with his mother while under the influence of narcotics and had allegedly attempted to strangle her several days before the fatal attack.
Investigators said the attack took place while other family members were away from home. Rahim allegedly assaulted his mother with a sharp weapon and physically attacked her, leaving her dead at the scene. Neighbours later discovered the bloodied body and informed police.
Local residents also alleged that Rahim Sheikh had been accused of killing his stepmother in 2016. He reportedly spent nearly six years in prison in connection with that case before securing bail. Following his release, he allegedly became addicted to yaba and other narcotics.
Police said drug paraphernalia was recovered from the suspect's room during the investigation.
The victim's daughter, Kakoli Akter, said she had visited her mother in the morning before leaving for work. She returned home after receiving news of the incident and learned that her brother had been accused of the killing.
Kotwali Police Station Investigation Inspector Sukanta Dutta said preliminary findings suggest the suspect attacked his mother with a sharp weapon before fleeing the scene.
Police have collected forensic evidence from the house and launched an operation to arrest the accused. Investigators also said they would verify claims made by family members regarding the suspect's mental health as part of the ongoing investigation.
