Youth handed over to police over 'objectionable' comment on prime minister
Leaders and activists of local Chatra Dal and Jubo Dal detained a youth in Narail's Lohagara upazila and handed him over to police on charges of making "objectionable" and defamatory comments about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Facebook.
Rabiul Islam, 27, was detained in front of the Lohagara upazila parishad gate, according to police, on Sunday (August 23).
Rabiul is the son of Tara Mia Sheikh of Daserdanga village in the upazila's Lakshmipasha union.
Police said allegations arose that Rabiul had made objectionable and defamatory comments about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman from his Facebook account. After the matter became locally known, leaders and activists of Chatra Dal and Jubo Dal detained him and later handed him over to police at Lohagara Police Station.
Abdur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Lohagara Police Station, said leaders and activists of the upazila Chatra Dal and Jubo Dal handed over a person named Rabiul Islam to them on charges of making derogatory comments about the prime minister.
He said police are verifying the comment made on Facebook, and other related matters will also be examined, with action to be taken according to law.
Police said further legal action will be taken after verifying the allegation and investigating the related matters.
