Youth held for waving knife in Dhaka's Banani

Police detained a young man at Banani in Dhaka on Saturday (September 26) after he allegedly brandished a knife on the street and created panic, police said.

The incident took place around 5pm on Road 11 in Banani.

Police said the man, identified as Hazrat Ali, 31, was sitting on the rear footboard of a police pickup van and waving the knife while making incoherent remarks.

He also allegedly claimed ownership of a motorcycle parked nearby. As he was carrying a knife, police initially kept their distance before an officer approached from behind the vehicle and restrained him. He was subsequently handcuffed.

Police said a knife and around Tk 80,000 in cash were recovered from him. Ali, who lives in Korail slum, has four previous cases against him, including charges related to theft and drugs, according to police.

Police also said the motorcycle he claimed as his did not belong to him and alleged that he had claimed ownership with an intention to commit a robbery.

Banani police Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam said Ali was sent to jail under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance.
