A young man was shot dead and another person injured when a group of assailants opened fire in Dhaka’s North Dhalpur area of Jatrabari on Sunday night (September 6).

The deceased was identified as Imran, son of Hakim Khan of Rayerbagh in Jatrabari. The injured, Md Zakaria, 33, is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Zakaria said a group of six to seven helmet-wearing men opened fire at Imran in North Dhalpur after shouting at him not to run away. One of the bullets struck Imran in the head, leaving him critically injured at the scene.

A stray bullet also hit Zakaria in the leg, seriously injuring him, he said.

The attackers allegedly fled the scene after snatching a motorcycle, according to Zakaria.

Imran’s wife, Sonia Khan, said he was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.

Inspector Md Habibur Rahman, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, confirmed the incident. He said Imran’s body had been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy and the matter had been reported to the relevant police station.

Zakaria remains under treatment in the hospital’s emergency department, he added.
