Youth killed in clash over Argentina-Egypt World Cup match in Cumilla
A young man was killed after clashes erupted between Argentina and Egypt supporters during their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match in Bangladesh's Cumilla district late Tuesday night (July 7).
The victim, Shariful Islam, 35, died after allegedly being assaulted during an altercation at a roadside tea stall in Dhanpur, under Cumilla Adarsha Sadar upazila.
According to police and local witnesses, tensions flared while fans were watching the Argentina-Egypt match. The argument escalated into a violent clash after Lionel Messi missed a penalty, with supporters of both teams becoming involved.
Police alleged that two local Argentina supporters attacked Shariful, inflicting critical head injuries. He was rushed to Cumilla Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Officers later recovered the body and sent it for an autopsy.
Nazira Bazar Police Outpost chief Shankar Kumar Das said the violence stemmed from an argument between rival supporters during the match.
Touhidul Anwar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station, said, "Raids are underway to identify and arrest those responsible."
No arrests had been made and no murder case had been filed as of the latest update.
