Youth killed in clash over road dispute in Kurigram

A youth was killed in a clash between two parties over a road dispute in Rajarhat Upazila of Kurigram. Five more people were injured in the incident. The Upazila administration has imposed Section 144 for an indefinite period in the area and surrounding areas to control the situation. At the same time, the police have arrested 10 people.

The clash took place around 2:30pm in the Phulk area of ​​Dangghat village in Umar Majid Union of the Upazila on Tuesday (July 14).

The deceased Jinnat Ali, 40, is the son of Abdus Sattar.

Police and local sources said that recently, with the help of locals, an encroached road was rescued and opened for public use at the initiative of the Upazila administration. On Tuesday, when they were going to start earth cutting work on that road, a dispute arose between Jinnat Ali and Joynal Mia and his people. When the clash started at one stage of the argument, an attack with country-made weapons occurred. Jinnat Ali was seriously injured in the stabbing. Joynal Mia and his son Nayan Ali and several others were injured in the clash.

Jinnat Ali died on the way to Kurigram General Hospital after locals rescued the injured. The injured Joynal Mia and Nayan Ali have been admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

Rajarhat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mamunur Rashid said that 10 people have been arrested so far in the incident. The police operation to arrest those involved is ongoing and additional police have been deployed in the area to strengthen patrols.

Rajarhat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Tanjila Tasnim said that Section 144 has been imposed at the scene and surrounding areas to control the law and order situation as tension spread in the area after the clash. The order will remain in force until further orders. He urged everyone to remain calm and not take the law into their own hands.
