Youth killed in gunfight between rival gangs in Ukhiya Rohingya camp

A Rohingya youth was shot dead in a gunfight between armed rival gangs at the Ukhiya Rohingya camp in Cox's Bazar.

The incident occurred around 10pm on Saturday (March 8) in block B-21 of the Kutupalong camp 8W.

The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Rafiq, 33, son of Shamsul Alam, a resident of block B-21 in the camp, said Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Arif Hossain.

The OC stated that Mohammad Rafiq was shot during a gunfight between armed members of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) and Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO) in the area between Camp-8W and Camp-8E. Nearby Rohingyas rescued him and rushed him to an NGO hospital in Camp-9, where on duty doctors declared him dead. The police have arrived at the scene to recover the body of the deceased.

Additional superintendent of police Md Kaisar Rizvi Quraishi of the 8th APBN, stationed at the Rohingya camp, confirmed the incident. He said, "A shooting incident occurred between the two groups, resulting in one Rohingya being shot to death. It has been reported that the deceased Rohingya youth was mentally challenged."

Earlier, on the night of March 4, armed assailants had brutally murdered a headman named Mohammad Nur in Camp 20.
