Youth killed in Indian Khasia firing along Sylhet border
A young man named Minhoj Uddin, 25, was killed in firing by Indian Khasia tribespeople along the Sonarhat-Lakhat border in Goainghat upazila, Sylhet. The incident occurred late Friday night, July 10, in the Lakhat area of India's Meghalaya state, and he died on the way to a hospital on Saturday morning.
The deceased was the son of Komar Uddin from Bhadeshwar village in the West Jafflong union of Goainghat upazila. The matter has been confirmed by Lt Col Md Nazmul Haque, commander of the 48 BGB Sylhet Battalion .
According to local sources, Minhoj and several others entered Indian territory at night, after which Khasia individuals opened fire on them in the Lakhat station area. He was wounded in the shooting and later brought back to the Bangladesh side, but succumbed to his injuries before reaching a hospital.
BGB commander Lt Col Nazmul Haque said initial information suggests Minhoj had entered about one kilometre inside Indian territory, allegedly for theft or some other unlawful purpose. He was shot and wounded by Khasia people there. The BGB has increased patrols and surveillance in the border area, and an investigation into the incident is underway.
