A young man was shot dead and an 11-year-old girl sustained bullet injuries after armed assailants opened fire in Chattogram.
The shooting took place around 9:15pm in Shaheed Minar Goli area of Rowfabad under Bayezid Bostami on Thursday night (May 7).
The deceased youth was identified as Hasan alias Raju, 24, a resident of Raozan upazila, police confirmed.
According to police, Raju had travelled from Raozan to visit his sister in Rowfabad on May 3. Witnesses said a group of armed miscreants suddenly opened fire targeting him, leaving him dead on the spot.
During the attack, Reshmi Akter, an 11-year-old local girl, was struck by bullets in the eye. She was rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Sub-Inspector Nur Alam Ashek, who is in charge of the hospital police outpost, confirmed that the child remains under medical care with serious injuries.
Police said panic spread across the neighbourhood immediately after the gunfire, while the attackers managed to flee the scene before law enforcers arrived.
Later, officers from Bangladesh Police recovered Raju’s body and sent it for autopsy.
Investigators said the motive behind the killing has not yet been established. However, law enforcers are examining possible links between the murder and a series of violent shootings in Raozan that have reportedly claimed at least 23 lives over the past 22 months.
An investigation is underway to identify and arrest those involved in the attack.
