A young man was shot dead during a violent clash between two rival groups over the control of fish enclosures on government-owned land in Chattogram's Banshkhali upazila late Thursday night (July 30).

The deceased was identified as Zillur Rahman, 30, a resident of Saral Union in Banshkhali.

Following the incident, police have launched an operation to arrest those involved.

According to police, the dispute centered on fish enclosures established on government-owned khas land along the coastal embankment. Two local factions, led by individuals identified as Mansur and Kabir, had long been at odds over control of the lucrative fish farms. The rivalry escalated into a violent confrontation late Thursday, during which Zillur Rahman was shot. He died at the scene.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Mahmudul Hasan of Chattogram District Police's Anwara Circle said preliminary investigations indicate the clash was triggered by the ongoing dispute over the fish enclosures.

"We are at the scene, and operations are underway to identify and arrest those responsible," he said.

Police have cordoned off the area and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the weapons used and the roles of those involved. Additional law enforcement personnel have been deployed to maintain order and prevent further violence.
