Youth tied to electric pole, beaten with pipe, hands burned with acid in Satkhira
A mentally unstable youth was allegedly tied to an electric post, beaten, and had an acid-like substance sprayed on his hands in Kolaroa upazila of Satkhira. The severely injured victim, 38-year-old Golam Rasul Sheikh, was initially admitted to the Kolaroa Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Satkhira Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
In connection with the incident, the victim's elder brother, Abdul Gafour Sheikh, filed a case at the Kolaroa police station against four individuals, including a woman. The accused are Jim Hossain, 22, Afroza Khatun Moni, 35, Poppy Khatun, 42, and Sekendar Ali, 65, from Mirzapur village under Kolaroa municipality.
According to the case statement, Golam Rasul is mentally ill, losing his balance most of the time despite occasional periods of normalcy. Around 5pm on August 10, while passing by the defendants' house in the Paschimpara area of Mirzapur village, his path was blocked, and he was tied to an electric pole.
The statement further alleged that the accused then beat Golam Rasul indiscriminately with sticks, causing injuries across his body. At one point, with the assistance of others, Jim Hossain allegedly sprayed an acid-like substance onto both of his hands, causing severe burns.
Hearing his screams, several locals came forward and rescued him, rushing him to the Kolaroa Upazila Health Complex. Due to his worsening condition, he was sent to Satkhira Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Meanwhile, a video circulating on social media showed Golam Rasul tied to the electric pole, with individuals seen beating him using a pipe.
Bappi Kumar Das, the resident medical officer at Kolaroa Upazila Health Complex, stated that Golam Rasul had burns on both hands and wounds on his legs. As the hospital lacked a burn unit, he was referred to Satkhira Medical College Hospital for better management.
However, the accused—Jim Hossain, Afroza Khatun Moni, Poppy Khatun, and Sekendar Ali—denied the allegations against them, claiming that Golam Rasul frequently came to their house to cause trouble and commit assaults, a matter they had previously reported to the local police. They asserted that they did not physically assault him.
Kolaroa Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) H. M. Shahin said that following a written complaint filed by the victim's brother Abdul Gafour Sheikh on August 10, an investigation verified the claims, leading to the formal registration of the case against the four accused.
