Yunus consoles family of slain Bangladeshi-origin NYPD officer Didarul
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus extended his deepest condolences to the family of Didarul Islam, a Bangladeshi-origin New York Police Department (NYPD) officer who was killed in a shooting incident in Manhattan in July.
On Monday night (local time), Yunus met with Didarul’s family at his hotel and presented them with a commemorative crest in honor of the late officer.
Attending the meeting were Didarul’s parents, Mohammad Abdur Rab and Minara Begum; his two sons, Ayhan Islam and Azhan Islam; his brother Kamrul Hasan; nephew Adian Hasan; sister Nadima Begum; and paternal uncle Ahmed Jamal Uddin. National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhter Hossen and Senior Joint Member Secretary Dr. Tasnim Jara also accompanied Yunus on his US trip.
“I was shocked when I read about the incident in the newspapers,” Yunus said. “I could not comprehend how such a tragedy could happen. The large turnout at his funeral showed the respect and love he earned.”
Didarul Islam joined the NYPD in 2021 and served in the 47th Precinct in the Bronx. Known for his dedication, he left behind two sons.
On July 28, Didarul was shot dead on Park Avenue in Manhattan while attempting to stop a gunman who had opened fire in a high-rise corporate building before killing himself. According to his family, Didarul sustained eight to ten bullet wounds.
