Bir Muktijoddha and Member of Parliament for Kishoreganj-4, Advocate Fazlur Rahman, has warned that the agreement between Dr. Muhammad Yunus and the United States could harm Bangladesh’s sovereignty if left unchallenged.

"The deal is somehow similar to the historic pact between Mir Jafar and Robert Clive," he said.

Speaking in a recent interview published on the YouTube channel “Manchitra,” the veteran politician said the nation must remain vigilant about any agreement that could compromise its independence and national interests.

“After June 23, 1757, the agreement between Robert Clive and Mir Jafar brought disastrous consequences for Bengal. The agreement involving Yunus and America could bring the same outcome if we fail to recognise and resist it,” Fazlur Rahman said.

He further added, “If we want to keep the country truly independent, such agreements must be cancelled. We need to have the political backbone to do so.”

The BNP leader also warned his own party against repeating what he described as the mistakes of the Awami League, saying any party engaging in similar actions would face the same consequences.

Commenting on Bangladesh’s ties with Pakistan, Fazlur Rahman said excessive closeness with Pakistan could push Bangladesh backward and deepen political and social divisions.

He alleged that some political groups maintain pro-Pakistan sentiments to preserve communal politics and secure support from a section of voters.

His remarks have sparked fresh political discussion, though no official response has yet been issued by Dr. Muhammad Yunus or any concerned party regarding the comments.
