Zaher Alvi surrenders before court in wife’s suicide abetment case
Television actor Zaher Alvi on Thursday (June 18) surrendered before a Dhaka court and sought bail in a case filed over the alleged abetment of his wife Afra Ibnat Ikra’s suicide.
Alvi voluntarily appeared before the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka through his lawyer and submitted a petition seeking bail. The court was hearing the application at the time of filing this report.
Public Prosecutor Harun Or Rashid confirmed the development.
According to the case statement, Ikra was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf at her residence in Mirpur DOHS on February 28. Family members and the house owner rushed her to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Later that night, Ikra’s father, Kabir Hayat Khan, filed a case accusing Zaher Alvi and others of abetting her suicide. The complaint alleges that prolonged family disputes and mental harassment drove Ikra to take her own life.
Zaher Alvi and Ikra were married in 2010 and have a son together.
Earlier, on June 4, Alvi’s mother, Nasrin Sultana Sheuli, who is also an accused in the case, surrendered before the court and secured bail.
The case remains under investigation, while further legal proceedings will depend on the court’s decision regarding Alvi’s bail petition.
