Zia memorial museum to reopen soon after renovations: Minister
Zia Memorial Museum in Chattogram will be reopened to visitors soon after the renovation and modernization work is completed, Liberation War Minister Ahmed Azam Khan said.
He said this while talking to reporters after visiting the museum adjacent to the Chattogram Circuit House on Friday (June 5).
The minister said that this historical establishment has been damaged due to long-term neglect and lack of maintenance due to the 'politics of revenge' of the previous government. In addition to restoring the museum to its previous status, the memories and various artifacts used by former President Ziaur Rahman will be preserved through modernization. Some rooms of the museum are currently kept empty to facilitate the renovation work.
Ahmed Azam Khan said that from Major Zia to President Zia, Ziaur Rahman played an important role in various stages of Bangladesh's history. This museum was established to preserve his memory. The materials used by him and his memorabilia will be properly preserved through the renovation work.
He further said that during the Liberation War, Ziaur Rahman declared independence, participated in the war and earned the title of Bir Uttam. Later, he served as the army chief and president.
The minister claimed that Ziaur Rahman played an important role in changing the course of the country's economy and development. However, he also commented that subsequent governments have tried to belittle his contribution. The minister said that the government will take maximum initiatives to preserve Zia's memory.
Regarding the Zia Independence Complex located next to the Kalurghat Radio Center, he said that its name was changed in the past for political reasons. In the future, initiatives will be taken to bring it back as the 'Zia Memorial Complex'.
At that time, State Minister for Liberation War Ishraque Hossain said that both the museum and the Zia Memorial Complex are important historical structures. It is important for future generations to know the history of the country and no nation can develop itself properly without knowing history.
Regarding the current condition of the museum, he said that some parts of the building have been damaged due to the earthquake. The museum will be reopened for visitors after the renovation work is completed quickly.
Chattogram-8 MP Ershad Ullah, Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia, South District BNP Convener Idris Mia and senior officials of the ministry were present during the inspection.
